Encouraging Growth, One Conversation at a Time: Meet Ms. Gibson
Ms. Gibson, one of the many exceptional school counselors at Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy (CM Prep), plays an important role in supporting students not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well. Now in her sixth year as a school counselor, she brings a thoughtful, student-centered approach shaped by her North Carolina roots and strong educational background.
After earning her undergraduate degree in psychology from Wingate University and her graduate degree in school counseling from University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Ms. Gibson began working with elementary and middle school students – helping them better understand themselves and their potential.
A Heart for Helping Others
For Ms. Gibson, school counseling is about connection and collaboration.
“I enjoy being part of a team and working together toward a common goal,” she shares. “I want to be a person in students’ lives who is encouraging and uplifting.”
Inspired by those who supported her along the way, she now strives to be that same source of encouragement for her students – guiding them as they discover their strengths and navigate challenges.
Meeting Students Where They Are
Ms. Gibson was drawn to online education for its flexibility and innovation.
“I really like the fact that we can meet families where they are and provide an alternative to your typical school setting,” she explains. In a world shaped by technology, she values the opportunity to connect with students in new and meaningful ways.
Her days may not follow a strict routine, but they are always focused on support. Between scheduled meetings with students, staff, and families, Ms. Gibson makes herself available whenever she’s needed most – ensuring no student feels alone.
Growth for Students – and for Herself
Working in a virtual environment has helped Ms. Gibson grow personally.
“I never considered myself to be a planner,” she admits. “However, this platform has shown me a very effective method of using my calendar to stay on task.”
What started as a new habit has now become an essential part of her daily routine, helping her stay organized and fully present for her students.
Inspired by Reflection and Resilience
When asked which students inspire her most, Ms. Gibson finds it almost impossible to choose – because each one brings something unique. Still, one middle school student stands out for their honesty and self-awareness.
“This student is not ashamed to share struggles and is willing to think about ways to better themselves,” she says. “We can all benefit from reflecting on what we need to work on and appreciating the wins – both big and small.”
It’s this kind of growth mindset that fuels Ms. Gibson’s passion and reminds her why her work matters every day.
