Helping Students Navigate Life: Ms. Meeker’s Role at CMPA
At Coast to Mountains Preparatory Academy (CMPA), Ms. Meeker is doing more than supporting students academically – she’s helping them learn how to navigate life. As a high school counselor, her work centers on equipping students with the real-world skills they need to succeed, both now and in the future.
More Than Academics
Ms. Meeker’s journey into counseling began after years in both teaching and traditional school counseling. What drew her to the role was a desire to focus on the lessons that often get overlooked.
“I really wanted to focus on teaching kids the things we don’t always have time for – like how to prioritize, how to communicate, and how to handle real-life challenges.”
Today, she works primarily with high school students, a group she’s especially passionate about supporting as they prepare for life beyond graduation. From budgeting simulations to career exploration activities, Ms. Meeker creates opportunities for students to build practical, lasting skills.
Addressing Stress in a Critical Season
High school can be overwhelming, and for many CMPA students, stress and anxiety are part of why they chose a virtual environment in the first place.
“Stress is definitely a big part of why students come here,” she explains. “Sometimes the flexibility helps – but sometimes the stress follows them, and they just don’t yet have the tools to cope with it.”
Through individualized “success plan meetings,” Ms. Meeker works closely with students and families to identify barriers and build strategies for success. Whether it’s adjusting schedules, addressing mental health challenges, or simply helping a student get back on track, her approach is deeply personalized.
Building Trust in a Virtual World
In an online setting, the connection doesn’t happen by accident – it’s intentional. Ms. Meeker prioritizes face-to-face interaction through live sessions, office hours, and one-on-one meetings.
“We’re real people, and they need to see that,” she says. “My job isn’t to punish students -it’s to help them figure out what they need to be successful.”
Her weekly office hours – sometimes for guidance, sometimes “just for the vibes” – offer students a space to connect, ask questions, or simply feel supported.
Small Breakthroughs, Big Impact
Some of Ms. Meeker’s most meaningful moments come from helping students unlock what’s holding them back.
“We’re not mind readers. We don’t know there’s a problem unless they tell us,” she says. “But when a student finally communicates what they need, everything can change.”
From helping a student draft their first honest email to a teacher to building confidence in self-advocacy, these small breakthroughs often lead to major academic and personal growth.
Skills That Last a Lifetime
For Ms. Meeker, success isn’t just about grades – it’s about growth.
“My favorite days are the ones filled with student meetings,” she shares. “If I can help a student gain a skill they’ll use five years from now, that’s everything.”
At CMPA, Ms. Meeker is helping students do more than succeed in school – she’s helping them become capable, confident, and prepared for whatever comes next.
